Install before departure
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a "digital SIM card" built directly into your smartphone. By simply downloading a data profile, you can access cellular networks just like you would with a physical SIM card.
No Swapping Required
Say goodbye to fumbling with tiny chips and SIM ejector tools.
Instant Activation
Purchase online and set it up instantly by scanning the QR code sent to your email.
Keep Your Number
Use "Dual SIM" mode to keep your home number active for calls while using a Japanese eSIM for data.
vs. Physical SIM Cards
No need to wait in long lines at airport counters. You can add a Japanese plan as a "secondary line" without removing your original SIM. This allows you to receive important calls or texts on your primary number while enjoying affordable local data. Plus, there's zero risk of losing your original SIM card.
vs. Pocket Wi-Fi
Forget about carrying a heavy extra device or worrying about its battery life every night. There’s no hardware to return, and it’s more battery-efficient for your phone. Best of all, since the connection is on your phone, group members can roam freely without losing signal by staying near a router.

Check If Your Phone Supports eSIM
Before anything else, confirm two things: your device supports eSIM, and it isn't carrier-locked.
How to check eSIM compatibility
Open your phone's dialer and type *#06#. If an "EID" number appears on screen, your device supports eSIM. No EID means you'll need a physical SIM card instead.

How to check if your iPhone is carrier-unlocked
Go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," you're ready to install a Japanese eSIM.
If your iPhone shows a carrier restriction, contact your carrier to request an unlock before you travel. iPhones purchased directly from Apple or sold as unlocked are already SIM-free.
On Android, check under Settings → Connections → SIM card manager (wording varies by manufacturer). When in doubt, contact the carrier you purchased the phone from.

Choose the Right Plan for Your Trip
CDJapan Rental offers two types of eSIM plans: fixed-data and unlimited.
📊 Fixed-data plans — best for most travelers
If your usage is mainly maps, messaging, and social media, a fixed-data plan is the safer choice. The cap is predictable, so there are no surprises on your bill.
♾️ Unlimited plans — best for heavy users
Traveling with heavy video streaming or frequent hotspot sharing? Unlimited plans have no total data cap and never cut your connection. After 3 GB of high-speed data in a single day, speeds are throttled — this is standard Fair Usage Policy (FUP) across the industry, not a CDJapan-specific restriction.
Fixed-data plans
Unlimited plans (FUP: speeds reduced after 3 GB/day)

Install the eSIM Before You Leave (QR Code Scan)
⚠️ Important: installing and activating are two separate steps.
- Install (scan the QR code) — do this at home, on Wi-Fi, before departure.
- Activate (turn the eSIM on) — do this after landing in Japan. Your plan's countdown only starts when you activate it.
Where to find your QR code
🔑
After purchasing, your QR code is available immediately in your CDJapan Rental My Page. Log in, go to your order, and you'll find the QR code and full setup instructions ready to use.
We recommend saving the QR code image from My Page before you leave home. This way, you're covered even if your confirmation email is delayed, lands in spam, or gets accidentally deleted — all common situations when traveling.

Activate Your eSIM After Landing in Japan
Once you're through arrivals, follow these steps to get online.
- Open Settings → Cellular.
- Tap the Japan plan you installed.
- Toggle Turn On This Line to on.
- Under Cellular Data, select Japan as your active data line.
- Open Settings → Connections → SIM card manager.
- Toggle the Japan eSIM to on.
- Set it as the preferred SIM for Mobile data.
Do you need to enable Data Roaming?
No. CDJapan eSIM connects directly to Japan's docomo network, so Data Roaming does not need to be on. This is different from roaming-type eSIMs (Airalo, Ubigi, etc.), which require Data Roaming to be enabled.
Using your eSIM as a hotspot
CDJapan eSIM supports hotspot sharing out of the box — no extra settings needed. If hotspot isn't working, try setting the APN manually. See the hotspot sharing guide for details.
eSIM Not Working? Quick Checklist
If you're connected but not getting data, run through this list first:
- Is your phone carrier-unlocked? (Check Step 1 above.)
- Is Data Roaming off? (For CDJapan eSIM, it should stay off.)
- Try toggling Airplane Mode on, then off — this resets the network connection.
- Restart your phone.
- Confirm the eSIM is actually activated in your Cellular settings (not just installed).

Why Choose a Japan-Local eSIM Over a Global Provider?
Not all Japan eSIMs work the same way. There are two fundamentally different types, and understanding the difference will save you a lot of frustration.
Roaming-type eSIM: how it actually works
Most global eSIM services — Airalo, Holafly, Saily, and others — use roaming technology. When you open Google Maps or send a message in Japan, your data doesn't connect directly to a Japanese network. Instead, it routes through overseas servers, typically in China or Singapore, before coming back to Japan.
The practical result: even when the signal looks strong, pages load slightly slower, Google Maps takes a beat longer to respond, and streaming video buffers more than it should. You may also find that certain Japan-only services and apps don't work, because your connection appears to originate from outside the country. On top of that, roaming-type eSIMs require you to enable Data Roaming in your phone settings — which can sometimes trigger unexpected charges if your home carrier's roaming kicks in instead.
Local-type eSIM (CDJapan Rental): direct connection to Japan
docomo direct
CDJapan eSIM connects directly to Japan's docomo network — the country's largest carrier, with over 99% national coverage. There's no overseas detour. Your data goes straight from your phone to Japan's infrastructure and back.
The practical result: low latency, full speed, and a genuine Japanese IP address. Japan-only apps and streaming services work exactly as they do for local residents. You also never need to enable Data Roaming — in fact, for CDJapan eSIM, Data Roaming should stay off.
If you're traveling for business, or you simply want a connection that just works without configuration headaches, a local-type eSIM is the right choice.

Roaming-type eSIM
(Most Global Services)
Your data is routed through overseas servers (e.g., Hong Kong or Singapore) before returning to Japan. This creates constant latency (lag), making video streaming sluggish and web searches feel unresponsive. You also typically have to enable "Data Roaming" in your settings.
Japan-Native eSIM
(Powered by CDJapan)
Connects directly to Japanese networks without overseas routing.
- Lightning-Fast Response: Low latency for smooth Google Maps and social media use.
- No Content Restrictions: Access Japan-only apps and videos just like a local user.
The Verdict
For the best experience in Japan, a "Japan-Native" eSIM is the superior choice for its easy setup and premium connection quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the QR code expire?
The QR code itself has no expiry date. Your plan's countdown only begins when you activate the eSIM in Japan — not when you scan the QR code.
Can I transfer my CDJapan eSIM to another device?
No. Once installed, a CDJapan eSIM is tied to that specific device and cannot be moved or reinstalled on a different phone. If you need a new device, you'll need to purchase a new plan. Note that this is a CDJapan Rental policy — other providers may handle this differently.
What if I activate the eSIM before arriving in Japan?
Your plan's days start counting from the moment you activate it. Activating before departure means you'll lose those days before you even land. We recommend installing (scanning the QR code) at home, but waiting to activate until after you arrive in Japan.
Does CDJapan eSIM support voice calls or SMS?
CDJapan travel eSIMs are data-only plans. Voice calls and SMS are not supported. For calls, use apps like WhatsApp, LINE, or FaceTime over your data connection. See our guide on using WhatsApp in Japan for more.
